I had a great conversation with Filipe Faria back in February. Filipe is a FLY listener who decided he wanted to be on the show, and I am so glad he did.
Filipe has had a love and curiosity for Africa since he was a young teenager, and was determined to spend some time there in his adult life. Eventually, this dream came true. Having been a pilot, he was able to work for Doctors Without Borders in the Congo in 2000-2001. Within a few months, Filipe was taken hostage by a group of child soldiers. In 2020, he is finally in a place where he can speak openly about it.
Filipe also tells us about his return to Africa in 2009 when he went to Le Festival au Desert, a massive three day music festival outside of Timbuktu in Mali. It was an adventure to get there, and an adventure to get out of there.
From there, we go to his experience in Peru, doing ayahuasca in a village in the Amazon..... stories are not hard to come by when talking to Filipe!

While this is not a time for travel, this is a time for armchair travel to hear some great stories, and dream about the possibilities for the future.
Tom Gehrels of Adventure Coordinators dropped by this past February to talk about his self-guided trek in the Dolomites in Italy. From there, we moved on to Ireland where Tom spoke of his Ring of Kerry hike and self-drive Ireland escapades. Having been to 103 countries, Tom knows adventure like no one else. Listen in for some good tips and insight, as well as some inevitable Tom inspired stories and a couple of laughs!
* Please note that this conversation was recorded in February, 2020.

In 2014, teacher Mark Quattrocchi left his life in Southern China to cycle home .... to Canada. This was a journey that took him two years, through 40 countries, 5 continents and over 35,000 kilometres. Mark has written a book about his story, called "The Cycle of Life and the Power of Saying Hello". He joins me on FLY to discuss the beauty and challenges of this experience, and how simply saying hello can change everything.

In 2015, Mario Rigby left his Toronto life behind to walk and kayak across Africa. He had never been to Africa, he had no real trekking experience, and he had never kayaked. More than two years later, Mario had been through 8 countries, walked 12,000 kms and kayaked 550kms. While these feats are impressive on their own, Mario's awareness of himself, humanity, and all living things is the true discovery of this journey. Without any role models of black travellers and adventurers, Mario stresses the importance of his life as an explorer, and why the world needs to see more people out on the road, regardless of gender, culture or ethnicity. Tune in to learn more about Explorer, Mario Rigby.

Laurel gave us some great tips on planning a hiking trip such as what to look for, essential items to bring, the different options of guided/self-guided/independent trips, accommodations, and how to be on your best behaviour in those mountain huts.
